5th Grade Information
END of the YEAR awards ceremony is at 9:00 on the 18th of May. Students should dress in their “Sunday best” – keep in mind the darker color of our backdrop. Lighter clothing usually photographs better in this setting, however, a specific color is not required. (This is not called a graduation in 5th grade, only 8th and 12th). Seating will be limited for this event!! In order to be equitable for all, we will be sending two tickets home for each family. If you are not able to attend the ceremony, please return the tickets to school.
Dates to be aware of in the next months:
Printable Calendar available here (created by Mrs. Falanga) calendar
4/21 & 4/22 – half the classes will go to Biztown on each day (We will need about 10 volunteers each day to work in the simulation. It is a Biztown guideline that parents do not work in the same shop/facility as their child. You will have time to enjoy lunch together and visit during your child’s breaks. *One of my favorite field trips!*)
5/4-5/8 – Week 2 of PARCC testing for ELA and Math (this is multiple choice)
5/15 – “Fifth grade FUN day” – we will need parent volunteers to help us celebrate with our children this day. Probably from around 9:00 till after lunch time. We will give out more details as we solidify plans….Let’s just say I think Human Foosball may reappear!
5/18 – 9:00 a.m. Awards Day
5/21 – Last Day for Students

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING/WORKING ON:
READING: We are currently beginning our Guide book Unit from the state on Hatchet. We will read multiple texts with similar themes and subjects. We are identifying and analyzing features of fiction including
- figurative language (metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, repetition, hyperbole, personification)
- foreshadowing & flashback
- story structure
- sensory imagery
- conflict – internal/external
- character development
WRITING: We are also focusing on the grammar skill of answering written questions using explicit textual evidence and when inferring in order to create well developed essays with details and support. This is a tough new skill that will be needed throughout our students’ academic career. An easy way to remember the steps to successfully completing this task is : State it, Cite it, Explain it!
We are also continuing to work on:
- developing good topic sentences & supporting details
- editing and correcting grammar
